As Western airlines once again become the focus of terrorist threat, the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) is highlighting the ongoing importance of aviation security in the fight against extremism. A plot by Yemen-based members of terrorist group Al-Qaida to smuggle explosive materials within innocuous-looking printer cartridges on US cargo planes was uncovered late last week, causing authorities on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as in Yemen itself, to increase airport security.

Smiths Detection announces its advanced aTiX scanners have been given official EU approval for liquid threat detection at airport security checkpoints. Compliance with the EU's Liquid Explosive Detection Systems (LEDS) Standard 2 Type C means the X-ray systems can be used to scan multiple liquid, aerosol or gel containers simultaneously in trays at carry-on baggage checks with no need for the containers to be opened.

The US Department of Homeland Security announced yesterday the deployment of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act-funded advanced imaging technology to 28 additional airports nationwide. The measurement was taken to strengthen the security efforts at the US airports.

From June 8 to July 14 a security scanner was tested at Zurich Airport to test the reliability of the system and its functionalities live. The system has found great acceptance among the passengers.

US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano announced approximately $56 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding for airport security projects at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Orlando International Airport, and St. Louis International Airport enhancing the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) efforts to strengthen security at airports while creating jobs across the country.

Two Belgian airports have recently deployed integrated IP Video technology from IndigoVision, as part of infrastructure and new passenger terminal projects. Charleroi Brussels South and Liège Airports are located in the Wallonia region of the country and are operated by SOWAER (Société Wallonne des Aeroports). The complete security solutions at each airport, which integrate CCTV surveillance with access control, emergency evacuation and perimeter protection, were provided by Fabricom, IndigoVision's long-standing Partner in the region.

At the request of the European Parliament and Member States, on June 15th the EU Commission has issued a communication assessing the use of security scanners at European airports. The EU commission made clear, that the deployment and operation of airport scanners must be based on common standards and that EU Members must also ensure compliance with European fundamental rights and health provisions. The communication is supposed to be a " fact-finding report".

L-3 Communications announced today that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has ordered approximately 200 ProVision advanced
imaging technology systems for the screening of passengers at U.S. airport checkpoints. These systems provide TSA with an additional technology to support TSA's layered security approach.

The surge in tourism has caused air traffic to hit new highs in the Middle East. However, the spurt in passenger numbers brings with it increased security concerns. New analysis from Frost and Sullivan, Middle East Airport Security Market Assessment, finds that the market earned revenues of $34.7m in 2008 and estimates this to reach $57.7m in 2015.
Airports have been upgrading their security systems to comply with the new government regulations and prepare for the escalating terrorist threats in the region.
