Jun. 14, 2013In 1999, 39 persons died in a major fire in the Mont Blanc tunnel. While aiming for high levels of tunnel safety, it is also important to make best use of public resources. Society demands a high level of safety, but not at any cost whatsoever. Scientists from Lund and Borås have taken up the challenge to develop a new structure for fire safety in tunnels.
moreMay. 30, 2013Buildings today can have any number of systems installed in order to control security, heating, lighting and ventilation. It is common practice, particularly in larger scale buildings, to combine these different elements into a single, integrated building management system (BMS). One essential building service has, to date, largely resisted full integration - fire detection. This situation is set to change with the evolution of a new device called OpenConnect Gateway.
moreMay. 24, 2013The façade of a building is an important part of the building as it provides a significant proportion of the building's thermal insulation and is also the outward face of the building. We have recently read both national and international reports of several fires involving the façades of buildings, with the result that there has been a lively debate on the use of flammable insulation in exterior walls.
moreMar. 21, 2013If the ancient wisdom in the headline is true, the launch of Tyco Fire Protection Products's new fire detection solution at Intersec 2013 should help installers and fire system integrators to outperform.
moreFeb. 19, 2013Over the years, buses and coaches have become technical marvels in terms of comfort and safety, not least with fire protection having become an area that both manufacturers and operators have started to take more seriously.
moreFeb. 07, 2013In the event of a fire, a traditional emergency lighting system does not facilitate signs to be ‘shut off', allowing people to walk directly into the path of danger. By responding to information sent from the fire detectors FIREscape+ puts an illuminated red ‘X' on appropriate emergency signs, advising people not to exit via that particular route and ensures a safer exit path.
moreJan. 21, 2013The Oxo Tower on the banks of the Thames has been a riverside landmark since the 1930s but entered a new lease of life in the 1990s when Coin Street Community Builders (CSCB) refurbished it into the mixed-used development it is today. Members of the Apollo Partner Plus initiative, Drax Services has recently been working with the CSCB to develop a design proposed by Environmental Design Associates and install a system for the Oxo Tower Wharf. Apollo fire detectors are now playing an integral part in keeping this iconic building on London‘s South Bank safe.
moreNov. 26, 2012The view across the countryside in Germany is continually being changed by wind turbines. In many regions, dozens of these unmanned power generators are shooting out of the ground in the shortest space of time. And this trend is spreading around the world as alternative energy becomes increasingly important. The fire risk of such systems should not be ignored. The equipment and property damage can quickly amount to millions in the case of a fire.
