Any power supply performing a mandatory function of a new or upgraded European fire alarm system must be third-party approved as being fully compliant with EN 54 part 4 Amendment 2. For certain environments standard fire detectors are not applicable. The flush-mounted smoke detector from Apollo is used in installations where it is impractical or undesirable to use a standard smoke detector. This might be for aesthetic reasons where an architect specifies unobtrusive fire detection or it might be for reasons of safety where a standard fire detector might be viewed as a hazard - for example, in a prison cell.
