On Friday the 12th of October in the frame of the World Standard day and the 25th anniversary of the European single market, Euralarm joined the conference “Standards meet the future’’, organized by CEN/CENELEC, ETSI, EFTA and the European commission.

Different panels reviewed the history and future of standardization and the impact it has on the single market and how standards take trade barriers away between countries in Europe. In the introduction it was highlighted that a lot of good standardization work has been done with a positive impact for businesses and consumers. The European mobile network, a simplified European banking system and cross country sales are just examples of what the EU achieved and where standards played a key role to achieve this.

The security industry has also taken steps forward in the field of European Standards. However, there is still work to be done. For example, the challenges with regulations such as the cybersecurity act and CPR need to be solved. It highlights also the importance for Euralarm to be actively involved with the process of making new regulations. Making a good standard takes time and needs input from all stakeholders, including SME’s and consumers. Since technology and market environment are rapidly changing, it has to be ensured that the standards stay in sync with these market developments. As focal point of many of these developments Euralarm and its members will continue to contribute to the standardization process.

Standardization should get more public awareness as well in our education system as with the public so that people understand the impact standards have on their day to day work and life. In order to achieve this a website and learning platform was introduced during the event which presents a good overview of the standardization world.
