Those who speak of safety do not expect to receive proprietary island solutions from suppliers, but open and inclusive concepts with a high level of sensor, controller and application competence, taking time-related and global dimensions into account – namely the entire machine life cycle and internationalisation.

As one of the market leaders in plant safety technology, Sick sustains the continuity of its integrated safety thinking and activities with SafetyPlus. Greater integration means keeping all safety-relevant aspects in sight – from the first planning steps and risk analysis to the engineering and project planning phases, and on to the commissioning, repair and modernisation of a machine.

Greater integration also leads to economical and future-oriented results with a high level of investment security in the form of comprehensive sensor, controller and service solutions from a single source. For the first time, users can achieve direct in-situ safety automation without requiring the control cabinet – with compact, decentralised UE44x7 safety remote controllers with an enclosure rating of IP67.

Both safety-oriented signals (DeviceNet Safety) and standard signals can be exchanged with a higher-ranking controller via the integrated DeviceNet interface. Of particular interest for time-critical applications in networks: for the first time, extremely fast and fixed reaction times of 8 ms are possible – regardless of the number of participants in the network – thanks to the ‘Fast Shut Off’ function.

Firstly, this minimises the safety distance between the protective equipment and the hazardous point-of-operation. And secondly, the days when users always had to decide between either rapid individual control or an expandable solution at the cost of longer network reaction times are over. The UE44x7 offers all the prerequisites required for the easy implementation of comprehensive safety-oriented automation.

Thus, with the help of Sick’s uniform CDS parameterisation interface, up to 32 certified function modules can link the connected safety sensors and actuators to create a decentralised safety solution.

‘Safety Enable’ function allows a standard PLC to directly control the safety outputs of the UE44x7 – without the use of a separate safety controller. Standard signals (e.g. Machine Start) can affect the remote IP67 safety controller via the central standard controller by means of the enabling principle. Hardware and installation costs can be minimised, and automation considerably simplified, because the UE44x7 provides the complete safety functionality in the field without a control cabinet.
