GIT SECURITY EMEA News June 2019

Dear readers,

With the approaching summer, I am sure the thought of last year’s heat wave is still in many of our minds, at least in those of Europeans, whereas our Middle Eastern Security colleagues might have thought of it as a mild summer. Being used to these temperatures or not, with great heat comes the heightened risk of fire and the responsibility of taking all the necessary steps to prevent it.

Most recently, the picture of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris with the spire aflame shocked the world. Whether construction workers may have violated the smoking ban on the roof, or whether the fire erupted from an electrical short-circuit, renovation efforts are many times source of an outbreak. However, the cause of the fire has not been conclusively clarified. According to the New York Times, the early detection technology was an aspirating smoke detection system from 2013, but there was no service contract. Also, the whole Cathedral was equipped with protective measures, but not the roof space with oak timbers dating back to the 12th century, because designers were determined not to alter the structure with fire walls or sprinklers. After the second alarm signal, a guard climbed up a staircase to validate the alarm. Even for a fit person, it takes six minutes to reach the roof space; this delayed response phase was in any case one of the main reasons for the extent of the fire.

However, until the details have been clarified, you can already find out about some further fire protection measures and other security systems from us: for example, the video fire detection system by Bosch in a printing company.

Or, if you know a CEO with nightmares caused by cyber threats, Gallagher informs you how remote access to the building can be an invitation for hackers and how to prevent this risk.

If you rather want an in-depth article about the lack of understanding about fire protection in the construction industry take a look at the commentary by Glyn Coates, Director at Zeroignition.

And don't forget to vote for GIT SECURITY AWARD. If you have a look at the great selection of products you will recognize that it is a tough decision to choose one product in each category. The voting tool is ready on www.security-award.com so please take some time and make your choice.

This year's Ifsec will take place on 18-20 June at Excel London, and the event promises to bring over 27,000 visitors together with over than 500 exhibitors, showcasing more than 10,000 security products. If you want to prepare for a visit to Ifsec, maybe you should start with our show preview. To keep you updated we will let you know what will happen at IFSEC on our website.

Best regards

Lisa Schneiderheinze for GIT's safety and security team
