Hangzhou Hikvision: H.264 technology secures Charles de Gaulle Airport. Although at the moment only known by experts in Europe, Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology has earned a good reputation in Asia during the last months. After being selected twice in “China potential 100” roll in the years of 2006 and 2007 by Forbes magazine, the magazine rated Hikvision in January as number 4 of the “2008 Chinese potential enterprises”. Also listed in Deloitte’s annual Top 50 of the high-tech, fast-growth companies in China this shows the vitality and the rapid growth of the high-tech enterprise. In China, the company has reached a market share of 60 % for compression board an 45 % for DVD products and is now focussing more on the foreign markets. As one of their first European projects, Hikvision delivered equipment for Germany’s World Cup 2006 stadiums project and realised surveillance projects at Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris.

A Pioneer with a Strong R&D

Department Hikvision’s expansion plans are not only based on the strengths Chinese companies are famous for, but the supplier has accumulated abundant experiences in researching and developing video technology. Sophisticated technology, ease of use and reliable after-sales service make the company one of the leaders in the security industry. With Hikvision’s manufacturing headquartered in Hangzhou, sales and technical supporters from 16 branches of domestic marketing are committed to maintaining active regional offices in different cities, while Hangzhou headquarters and North America branch are responsible for developing international business. As the overseas marketing is becoming more and more mature, international business is also spreading.

H.264 Technology at Charles de Gaulle Airport

Starting from a strong home market in China, Hikvision realised its first projects in Europe. Paris is served by two main airports: the largest airport Charles de Gaulle (CDG) in the north and the second one Orly (ORY) in the south. Together, the two airports welcome 75 million passengers annually, with flights to 500 cities in 132 countries. Most international flights arrive at CDG, while domestic flights mostly arrive at ORY. Both of them are solely under the authority of Aéroports de Paris (ADP), the first European airport group in terms of cargo traffic and the second in terms of passenger traffic.

With extensive flow of population movement and cargo transport, paramount concern is drawn on public security, especially on passenger safety, which is tied directly to the return on investment (ROI) of ADP. The most effective means of enhancing security in airports is IP video surveillance. Through cooperation between ADP and Argos Technologies, a French DVR Manufacturer, Hikvision H.264 compression boards were selected for the use at both airports. In total 250 compression boards were installed in CDG and 20 units in ORY.

The end users decided on these products for their sophisticated technology, ease of use and reliable after-sales service. High-quality video, real-time transmission, motion detection, convenient control, the ability to track and record, Hikvision’s compression board fully meets the requirements demanded by airports.

The state-of-the-art A/V compression board adopts most advanced H.264 ACE (Advanced Code Efficiency), which has the advantage of high image quality, low bitrate and low storage requirement. Additionally, they flexibly adjust various resolutions with high-quality digital video streams at 25 frames per second for transmission over the IP network.

Airports require solutions that can handle distributed architecture and adapt the level of video transmitted to different bandwidth constraints to provide the best quality bandwidth ratio to each user. As such, the compression board also meets the requirement of providing high-quality, real-time video to users located on the local network with no bandwidth limitation while offering lower resolution or frame rates to users situated in remote monitoring sites.

Since the system implementation, both CDG and ORY became much more efficient. In 2006, ADP handled 82.5 million passengers. Meanwhile, ADP Group had a turnover of € 2.076,8 million, ranked second in Europe, and a net result of € 152.1 million. “CDG has now enhanced its safe and secured working environment while utilising Hikvision compression boards to get high quality coverage anywhere in the airport 24 hours a day,” says a terminal operator of CDG airport.
