The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reacted cautiously to today's publication of the European Commission's Airport Package of legislation which is aimed at addressing the critical issues of European airport capacity and competitiveness.

The European Commission has adopted a proposal for an European Union legal framework on security scanners. This legislation allows airports and Member States that wish to use security scanners for the screening of passengers to do so under strict operational and technical conditions.

American Science and Engineering, Inc. ("AS&E") announced that the Dutch Customs Administration in the Netherlands will deploy their recently purchased Z Backscatter Van (ZBV) mobile X-ray screening system to inspect commercial and cargo airplanes. The system will scan in real-time a variety of aircraft to reveal organic threats and contraband hidden in the structure of the airplane. This is the second ZBV system deployed by Dutch Customs -- the other is currently in use at the Port of Rotterdam.

UK's largest airport, London Heathrow, will install facial recognition scanners by September for international and domestic passengers to prevent illegal immigration in the country. The scanners will go in terminals one and five, where international and domestic passengers commingle, said Mary Kearney, senior media relations manager for BAA, which operates Heathrow.

Accenture has been selected by the Ministry of Internal Affairs to design and deliver Automated Border Control Systems (ABCS) at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam.
