Logan Teleflex: Airport Two-step - an innovation at Fairbanks International Airport. Logan Teleflex, the worldleading manufacturer and integrator of baggage handling systems, has won a major US$3.6 million contract to supply its leading-edge technology to Fairbanks International Airport, Alaska, USA.

This contract forms part of the expansion programme for modernising and expanding the airport. Logan Teleflex will complete Phase 1 of the project, already started in October 2007, by March 2008, and has a target date of March 2009 for the introduction of two regional carrier ticketing systems in Phase 2. This contract follows on from Logan Teleflex‘s successful collaboration with Alaska Airlines to implement an innovative and completely inline two-step process of passenger check-in for the Airline at Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage, Alaska.

Screening and Sorting out of Sight

Working together with general contractor Davis Constructors (Anchorage, Alaska, USA) and baggage handling systems consultant URS Corporation (Seattle, Washington, USA), Logan Teleflex will supply a new in-line EDS-enabled (explosive detection system) baggage handling solution as part of the renovation and expansion programme for the existing terminal.

This system utilises three CTX 5500 GE/Invision series explosive detection machines and includes ticketing, screening and bag sorting onto two ‚crescent plate‘ make-up carousels. The system will also include two inbound systems with stainless steel sloped plates and two regional carrier ticketing systems.

The innovative two-step checkin is benchmarking modern approaches to passenger check-in methods. First developed together with Alaska Airlines for Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage, the two-step check-in design significantly reduces the need for conventional check-in counters.

Speedy Check-In

Instead of going to a conventional check-in counter – a system that was developed over 40 years ago – passengers will in future use a kiosk at the airport to type in the details of their required flight, or they can book online and check-in from their own home or office. They are then issued with a boarding pass that they take together with their luggage to one of 13 two-step check-in units.

The passenger presents the bag to the scale unit to check that it conforms to weight regulations and shows the boarding pass to the agent. If all is in order, the passenger walks straight to the gate. This greatly speeds up the ticketing process and reduces passenger congestion.

Gary Downs, Vice President, Sales, Logan Teleflex, said: “The contract for supplying the ingenious Two-step check-in to Fairbanks International Airport shows how Logan Teleflex is at the forefront of baggage handling system innovation. We are very proud to be working with Alaska Airlines to roll out the Two-step check-in throughout its operations. Not only is this approach at the leading edge of airport technology design, it benefits passengers immensely by speeding up the check-in procedure and making their airport experience easier and more enjoyable.”
